Relief, anger over Russia journalist's staged deathNews that the supposed murder of a prominent Russian journalist and Kremlin critic was actually staged by Ukraine to thwart a real attempt on his life provoked both relief and anger on Wednesday. In a stunning development barely 24 hours after he had been reported killed, Arkady Babchenko appeared at a press conference where he admitted participating in a "special operation" to catch the alleged mastermind of a Russian plot to kill him. European Parliament President Antonio Tajani said he was "relieved" that Babchenko had not been killed, after earlier denouncing the supposed murder as a "hideous crime".

Google blasted for listing ‘Nazism’ as belief of California RepublicansRepublicans blasted Google after the search engine briefly identified “Nazism” as one of the tenets of the California Republican party. The characterisation quickly drew a backlash from conservatives. Rep Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield, California’s highest-ranking Republican in Congress, tweeted that the term’s inclusion was a “disgrace”, adding a “#StoptheBias” hashtag.

Eleven killed in Nicaragua protests, including attack on Mother's Day marchBy Oswaldo Rivas MANAGUA (Reuters) - Eleven people were killed on Wednesday in one of the worst days of violence since protests against Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega began more than a month ago, a rights group said on Thursday. Witnesses said pro-government armed groups opened fire on the marchers during a demonstration on Wednesday, Nicaragua's Mother's Day. The march was held to remember the children who were among the more than 80 killed since the start of protests more than a month ago.

Taliban 'talking and fighting,' says U.S. commander in AfghanistanBy Phil Stewart WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan played down a spate of recent Taliban attacks on Wednesday, saying violence levels were still lower than average as some insurgents talked peace - a situation he described as "talking and fighting." "You see mid-level, senior-level Taliban leaders engaging with Afghans," said Army General John Nicholson, adding that a lot of the diplomatic activity was taking place "off the stage." Nicholson's remarks came the same day that gunmen armed with assault rifles and grenade launchers attempted to penetrate the heavily fortified headquarters of the Afghan interior ministry, battling security forces for more than two hours in the latest attack on the capital Kabul. The attack was a reminder of the challenges facing U.S.-backed Afghan forces even after 16 years of war, including in the capital Kabul.

Assad raises prospect of clashes with U.S. forces in SyriaBy Tom Perry BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad raised the possibility of conflict with U.S. forces in Syria if they do not withdraw from the country soon. In an interview with Russia's RT international broadcaster, Assad said he would negotiate with fighters backed on the ground by Washington, but would reclaim territory they control by force if necessary, whether or not American troops supported them. In Washington, the State Department said it was not looking to fight Syrian or Iranian forces, but would use "necessary and proportionate force" to defend U.S. and partner forces in the fight against Islamic State in Syria.

Babchenko showed up at a news conference on Wednesday, saying that Ukraine's security services faked his death to thwart a plot on his life.
