'Mic drop' for Kushner during his UAE arrival

Senior U.S. and Israeli officials landed in the United Arab Emirates on Monday on a historic trip to finalize a pact marking open relations between Israel and the Gulf state, and told Palestinians it was now time for them to negotiate peace.

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner added on arrival that Washington could maintain Israel's military edge while advancing its ties to the UAE, the Arab world's second largest economy and a regional power.

Hamas says deal reached to calm violence with IsraelGaza’s Hamas rulers said Monday they have reached an agreement through international mediators to end the latest round of cross-border violence with Israel. Under the deal, Hamas is to halt the launches of explosives-laden balloons and rocket fire into Israel, while Israel said it will ease a blockade that has been tightened in recent weeks. Philippines extends partial coronavirus curbs in Manila until Sept. 30Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Monday partial restrictions in and around the capital Manila will be kept for another month starting Sept. 1 to tackle a rising number of coronavirus cases and further expand hospital capacity. Duterte announced the decision in a late night televised address after the health ministry reported another 3,446 new cases of the coronavirus and 38 fatalities that day, taking its total count to 220,819 cases with 3,558 deaths. Health Secretary Francisco Duque said the daily reported cases "remains high," citing a need to intensify anti-COVID-19 measures to slow the infection rate, which is the highest in Southeast Asia.

Ghislaine Maxwell reportedly allowed in person legal visit despite coronavirus lockdownGhislaine Maxwell has reportedly been allowed an in-person visit by her legal team in what is believed to be the first permitted in a New York City federal jail during the pandemic lockdown. According to the New York Daily News, Maxwell, who is facing six criminal charges, was allowed to hold a face to face meeting at Sunset Park’s Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on Friday morning. All involved reportedly wore masks during the meeting. Other inmates, who have been in lockdown since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, have had neither family, nor legal visits. Maxwell has been held on remand for less than two months. “I’m incredulous really that she was the first one when there are those of us who have been waiting for nearly six months to have an in-person visit with our clients,” Susan Marcus, a lawyer representing detainees in the centre, told the paper.

World Bank: Lebanon blast caused damage up to $4.6 billionThe massive explosion in Beirut earlier this month that killed and injured thousands of people has caused up to $4.6 billion in physical damage, the World Bank said in a report released Monday. The Aug. 4 blast was caused by the explosion of nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate stored at the Port of Beirut since 2014. The blast was the most destructive single incident in Lebanon’s history with thousands of buildings, including residential homes, hospitals, schools and museums suffering considerable damage.

Worth the wait: Yellowstone’s Giantess Geyser erupts for first time in six yearsGiantess is one of the biggest geysers in the national park, and typically explodes between twice and six times a year In these troubled times there comes a point where we all need to let off steam.For this huge geyser in Yellowstone park, the moment was now and the eruption was spectacular, after a six-year wait.But, for the rest of us, watching this natural phenomenon is strangely meditative and beautifully distracting from much of the bad news around, despite the violent geothermal forces propelling it.Giantess Geyser spouted for the first time in more than six years in Yellowstone National Park, which straddles part of Wyoming and a little of Montana, on 25 August, according to the US National Park Service (NPS).“She” has more typically erupted between twice and six times a year in the past, according to the NPS website, and blasts a spout up to 200ft high.“The surrounding area may shake from underground steam explosions just before the initial water and/or steam eruptions,” the NPS website adds.Giantess is one of the biggest geysers in the park, alongside phenomena such as the super-tall Steamboat geyser, the largest active geyser in the world, and the park’s most famous, Old Faithful, renowned for its punctual regularity as it soars from the ground about 20 times a day.Colorful hot spring features in the park include the blue-hued Morning Glory Pool and the psychedelic Grand Prismatic spring, as well as whiffy, sulfurous bubblers and roiling natural pots of scalding hot water fizzing out of the rocks.The features are among more than 10,000 hot springs and geysers in the park, a Unesco world heritage site.

Restaurant collapse in China's Shanxi kills 29Twenty-nine people were killed and seven seriously injured when a restaurant collapsed in northern China's Shanxi province, the country's emergencies ministry media said on Sunday. The accident in the two-storey structure occurred as villagers and relatives gathered for a birthday party, and the rescue operation ended early on Sunday, state media said. China restaurant collapses during birthday party, killing 29Rescue efforts ended at a two-story restaurant in a northern Chinese village that collapsed during a local resident's 80th birthday celebration, leaving 29 people dead, authorities said Sunday. Germany's president condemns far-right Reichstag demonstration as an 'attack on democracy'Germany’s president condemned an “unacceptable attack on the heart of our democracy” on Sunday, after far-right activists broke into the grounds of the Reichstag, the seat of the German parliament. The incident occurred after a demonstration against coronavirus measures on Saturday, attended by some 40,000 people. Early Saturday evening activists carrying the black, white and red-striped flag of the Kaiser era broke through barricades separating the Reichstag from the march. Video clips show a stream of demonstrators run up the steps of the building before gathering in front of the doors. Riot police then step in to ensure that demonstrators did not attempt to enter the building. “We will never accept this,” said President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “The Reichstag is our house of parliament and thus the symbolic centre of our free democracy - that it’s been abused by extremists is unacceptable,” added Interior Minister Horst Seehofer.

One person shot dead as Trump supporters and BLM protesters clash in PortlandOne person was shot dead as a large caravan of President Donald Trump supporters and Black Lives Matter protesters clashed in the streets late on Saturday in the US city of Portland, which has seen frequent demonstrations for months that have at times turned violent. Police said the violence took place in Portland's downtown area and that they had made arrests. It wasn't clear if the shooting was linked to fights that broke out as a caravan of about 600 vehicles was confronted by protesters in the area. "A political rally is caravanning throughout downtown Portland. There have been some instances of violence between demonstrators and counter-demonstrators," Portland police said on Twitter. "Officers have intervened and in some cases made arrests." A local NBC affiliate quoted police saying one person had died in a shooting. No details about the identity of the deceased were provided. "I can confirm a shooting, one person deceased, in the area of SW 3rd and Alder, and that we are in the early stages of a homicide investigation," a police representative was quoted as saying by KGW News. Demonstrations against racism and police brutality have swept the United States since the death in May of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Tensions between rival protest groups have roiled downtown Portland every night for nearly three months following Floyd's death. President Donald Trump's administration in July deployed federal forces to Portland to crack down on the protests.

Joe Biden to go on the road again as poll lead shrinksWith his poll lead narrowing, Joe Biden is ready to campaign in person after months of being hunkered down in his Delaware basement because of the coronavirus pandemic. The former vice-president will go on the road after the September 7 Labour Day public holiday in the US. No itinerary has been set, but Mr Biden is expected to visit key swing states including Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Urban unrest and an aggressive performance by Donald Trump at last week’s Republican National Convention have cut Mr Biden’s lead by several points. And she was just flirting with me, and then we start flirting back and forth,” Granda said.“Towards the end of my work shift, she’s like: ‘Hey would you wanna go back to my hotel room?’ And as a single 20-year-old I’m like yeah, of course.“And then she’s like: ‘But my husband wants to watch.’Granda said: “Immediately I thought it was a bit strange, and I backed off. [Then] she’s like: ‘Oh no, he’s not going to do anything. He’s just gonna sit in a corner and he wants to watch and it’s his thing.’”An initial sexual encounter developed into a years-long relationship with the couple, Granda told Reuters, with he and Becki Falwell having sex “multiple times a year” while Jerry Falwell watched.Falwell would later go into business with Granda, buying a Miami hostel.After Reuters published the interview with Granda on Monday, Falwell denied he was part of the trysts, and suggested his wife had an affair. “Becki had an inappropriate personal relationship with this person, something in which I was not involved,” Falwell said in a statement.The news also emerged as Politico published a story alleging that Becki Falwell had had a sexual encounter with a former Liberty University student, who was a band mate of her son.Liberty University, which was founded by Falwell’s televangelist father in 1971, is known for its strict rules over students’ relationships.“Sexual relations outside of a biblically ordained marriage between a natural-born man and a natural-born woman are not permissible at Liberty University,” the university’s honor code reads.In a statement to Politico Liberty University reiterated that it has “… policies against employees having sexual relationships with students, as well as having other inappropriate relationships outside of marriage, whether consensual or not”.In a statement provided to the Washington Examiner, Falwell said the couple had retained a relationship with Granda to try to suppress the relationship. He also accused Granda of attempting to extract “substantial monies” and claimed, without offering evidence, that Granda “may have targeted other successful women”.Granda told ABC: “That’s false. That’s ridiculous. That’s just them trying to smear me.”
